FAQ on Synthetic Colors Phase-Out, including Red 3 Ban:
Q: What is the FDA doing?
A: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is phasing out six additional synthetic food dyes from the nation's food supply, with the goal of eliminating these colors from use in food by the end of 2026. This is a process, not a sudden ban, and involves both FDA actions and voluntary cooperation from the food industry. Additionally, the FDA intends to revoke authorization for use in food of two additional synthetic colors (Citrus Red 2 and Orange B).
Q: Which dyes are being phased out by the FDA?
A: Red 3, banned by FDA effective January 15, 2027
A: Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, FDA has requested voluntary removal by the food industry by end of 2026.
A: Citrus Red 2 and Orange B, FDA revocation pending, date TBD
Q: Do all DecoPac’s edible products contain synthetic dyes?
A: No. Many items are already free from synthetics, and the impacted products will be transitioned to a new formula. Please visit DecoPac.com and search “Red 3 Free” or “Made Simply” or use our left side navigation to help identify which items already meet the requirement.
Q: What does this mean for the food industry?
A: The food industry will seek alternatives to replace synthetic dyes in their products. The FDA is fast-tracking the review of natural alternatives.
Q: When will DecoPac products be reformulated?
A: We are well underway to remove Red 3 from our products and working diligently with our manufacturers to find alternative ingredients for products with other impacted synthetic colors. We are aware of other pending state legislation related to specific ingredients and will ensure to continue to provide products that comply with these laws. Use the link above to see additional details regarding impacted items and reformulation status.
Q: Will the reformulated items have new item numbers?
A: Yes. To make the transition cleaner for labeling, transitioned items will have new item numbers and the existing item numbers will discontinue. This will happen as new formulas become available.
Q: Still have questions?
A: Do not hesitate to reach out to your DecoPac Sales Representative or our customer service team at 1-800-DECOPAC (1-800-332-6722) to discuss your needs.
